The Stari Grad Plain is a fertile plain in the central part of the island of Hvar, beside the town of Stari Grad in Split-Dalmatia County. It is also inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and visitors can walk through a landscape that is almost unchanged since antiquity.
In 384 BC Greek colonists from the island of Paros founded the colony of Pharos on the site of today's Stari Grad. They divided the plain into 75 equal plots, called chora, each measuring 181 x 905 meters. The Greek division is still visible in the dry-stone walls that mark the boundaries, and all later divisions of land took place within these basic parcels and were recorded in the same way. Throughout history the plain has kept its agricultural character, so layers of all the cultures that used it have settled in it.
The landscape is a protected cultural good and part of the UNESCO World Heritage, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-3827.
