Paravia-Barbariga Fortification System, Vodnjan

The Paravia-Barbariga fortification complex is located in the area of the Town of Vodnjan, in Istria County. It is interesting as a military landscape that at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century protected the Pula naval harbour.

Construction began in 1894, and most of the buildings were completed by 1910. The system comprises coastal and land fortifications and auxiliary structures. Of the permanent type are Fort Forno, the Benedetto and Caluzzi batteries, the Paravia Ost and Paravia West forts and the rear barracks Paravia Untertritt, six fortifications in all. Three fortifications are of the semi-permanent type: the strongpoints Bus, Giacomo and Spinida. Numerous rear buildings are added to them, among them the shelter for searchlights and crew at Punta Barbariga. The military structures of the permanent type were built of fine blocks of local stone, concrete and reinforced concrete.

The complex is a protected cultural property and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-2591.
