About 3 kilometres east of Vodnjan, in Istria County, lies the Guran archaeological site. There one can see what an early medieval Istrian settlement with its church looked like.
The settlement has been partly investigated: ramparts built of dry stone and several living quarters were discovered, and it was abandoned most probably in the 15th century. Near it lie the remains of an early medieval three-aisled basilica with three rectangularly inscribed apses. The aisles were separated by massive masonry pillars, and the floor in opus spicatum technique is partly preserved. By the type of building and the fragments of stone sculpture the basilica is dated to the 8th and 9th centuries, and it remained in use until the 15th century. In the Romanesque period a bell tower was added against its south wall.
The site is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4014.
