Archaeological Site Biškupija, Pomer

Biškupija is an archaeological site northeast of Pomer, right by the sea coast, in the municipality of Medulin in Istria County. It is interesting to those who like to follow the traces of old layers: here a Roman building was turned into a church with a small monastery.

On this spot stood a medieval church and a smaller Benedictine monastery, and the church is mentioned in a charter from the beginning of the 12th century. It was built on the foundations of an older Roman building. On the surface two walls of the sacred building and part of the apse can still be seen today, there are Roman spolia in the walls, and a mosaic floor is partly visible. The area was continuously inhabited from antiquity to the 14th century.

The site is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code RRI-429.
