In the centre of Grohote on the island of Šolta, right beside the north wall of the parish church, lie the remains of an early Christian basilica. Visitors can imagine here what an early Christian place of worship on the island looked like. The place belongs to the municipality of Šolta in Split-Dalmatia County.
The basilica had a single nave and a semicircular apse, and only the foundations have survived to this day. Its floor was paved with mosaic, but after excavation it was protected again by being backfilled. Beside the foundations, on the west side, decorative architectural fragments are lined up. The village cemetery extends up to the basilica, where two early Christian sarcophagi with crosses inscribed in circles can be seen. The site is dated from the 1st to the 6th century.
The basilica is a protected cultural good, archaeological heritage, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4635.
