Wreck of the Ship "Vassilios", Komiža

Not far from Komiža on the island of Vis, on the seabed lies the wreck of the large Greek freighter "Vassilios". This underwater site attracts divers and lovers of maritime history. It belongs to the town of Komiža in Split-Dalmatia County.

The ship was built in 1920 in Osaka, Japan, and was originally called "Eastern Temple". Its capacity was 3,673 GRT. It sank in 1939 after striking the shore. Today the wreck lies on its port side, 100 metres long and 15 metres wide. Besides the huge cargo hold, the engine room and superstructure are well preserved, so divers can get a clear idea of the internal arrangement of a large steamship.

The wreck is a protected cultural good, archaeological heritage, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-80.
