West of the village of Umčani near Vrgorac is an archaeological site that combines two periods of the past: prehistory and the Middle Ages. For those interested in stećci and burial mounds it is a worthwhile stop on a journey through the Dalmatian hinterland.
The site has two phases. The oldest consists of three mounds, the largest of which has a diameter of about 23 metres and a height of approximately three metres. Although it is not possible to date them precisely, they are assumed to date from the Bronze Age. On two of these mounds a medieval cemetery developed in the 14th and 15th centuries. On the largest, 11 chest-shaped stećci are preserved, three of which are decorated with motifs of a cross, a rosette, a star, a rope-like wreath and a hand. On the smaller mound stand two slabs, one of which bears an eight-pointed star. On the surface of both mounds medieval graves can also be seen.
The site is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-6715.
