Historic Urban Ensemble of the Town of Krk

The town of Krk lies on the southwestern coast of the island of the same name, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. A well-positioned harbor has allowed people to live here without interruption through the centuries, so Krk is among the oldest continuously inhabited places in the northern Adriatic. A walk among the walls, the cathedral and the narrow streets is therefore a true walk through layers of history.

The street layout dates from Roman times, when a wall and baths with mosaics were built. In the 5th and 6th centuries an early Christian three-aisled church was founded above them, in which the first stage of today's cathedral complex can be recognized. In the Middle Ages the town kept the Roman plan, and repaired and enlarged the old ramparts. A considerable part of the later defensive belt, the walls and bastions that the Frankopans built by the sea at the beginning of the 15th century, still stands. They are joined by the Venetian round tower next to the Prince's Palace and the town gate and walls from the 15th and 16th centuries.

The town is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-2684.
