The Kotišina castle, in the vicinity of Makarska in Split-Dalmatia County, recalls the time of the wars between the Republic of Venice and the Ottomans. It is interesting to visitors because it shows how a natural rock could be turned into a defensive building.
It was built in the middle of the 17th century, during the Cretan War. Natural rocks are joined by a high wall, so a multi-storey building of irregular plan arose. It consists of two separate rooms, of different heights on the ground floor, but joined at the level of the first floor. The facade has loopholes at all levels and a small machicolation. On the ground floor is a newer arched door, and on the upper floor a door with a stone lintel. The entrance to the northern part is on a different level and was once hidden by a forework, whose ruined remains are still visible. The single-pitched roof of stone slabs has not survived.
The castle is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4880.
