The Namjesništvo complex in Zadar is the most monumental building complex on the peninsula of the historic core. It is located in the eastern part of the town, and visitors will recognise it by its size and its position between several squares and streets.
The complex arose at the end of the 19th century by joining the Rector's Palace and the Provveditore's Palace into a single whole, intended for the provincial government of Dalmatia, then a province of Austria-Hungary. It is bounded by Poljana Šime Budinića on the north, Petar Zoranić Square and Andrija Medulić Street on the east, Špiro Brusina Street on the south and Rivnica Street on the west. The Provveditore's Palace, and especially the Rector's Palace, were for centuries the seat of secular authority, so historical documents call them by various names, among them the municipal, judicial, governor's, government and lieutenancy palace. The complex is linked to the period from the 13th to the 20th century.
The complex is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-7106.
