Archaeological Site with Remains of a Villa Rustica, Blato

At the foot of the Mišjak hill, in the eastern part of Velo polje near Blato on the island of Korčula, in Dubrovnik-Neretva County, are the remains of an ancient villa rustica. For visitors it is interesting because it shows what an agricultural estate beside a fertile field looked like, and later the medieval church of Our Lady of the Field grew on its remains.

It was discovered during road construction. The archaeological excavation in 1979 covered a part of the complex 50 m long, with an especially valuable economic part: an installation for processing wine and oil. On the basis of numerous movable finds the site is placed in the period from the 2nd to the 6th century AD. It has all the features of a typical villa rustica, built at the edge of a fertile field, near the main ancient thoroughfare on the island.

A protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4675.
