Stomorska is a settlement in Split-Dalmatia County, in a bay of the same name in the north of Šolta. For visitors it is interesting as the largest settlement on the island, one that grew around a castle, a casella and a small harbor.
It took its name from the church of St. Mary and is mentioned as early as the 14th century, and as a settlement it began to develop in the mid-17th century. The noble Cindro family also owned land there, whose 18th-century castle became the first core of the settlement; beside it arose the casella, used for cleansing ships of infection and as a warehouse. At the end of the 19th century, in the eastern part, the single-nave small church of St. Nicholas was built, which together with the massive old school closes off a small square above the harbor. During the 18th and 19th centuries new families arrived, from the mainland and from the island.
