On the shore in Podgora, next to the hotel Primordija, in Split-Dalmatia County, stands a tower called Kaštil. The place is interesting to walkers along the riviera because it is a defensive building of a kind that once stood in large numbers along the Makarska littoral.
The tower was built at a place where the terrain dropped steeply toward the beach. It has a rectangular floor plan, with a vaulted ground floor, above which rose a partly preserved first floor, and the roof has not been preserved. A small entrance framed by massive monolithic stones is on the southern, seaward facade, together with a smaller window that could have served as a loophole. There are loopholes on the western facade as well, and the interior walls have a series of small niches. The tower has no stylistic decoration; by type it is a fortification built in the time of the War of Candia, to defend the population from Turkish attacks, and it is dated to the 17th and 18th centuries.
The tower is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4789.
