The church of St. Ambrose in Nin, in Zadar County, stands next to the Upper Gate. It is interesting to visitors because of its link with the early Croatian Middle Ages: the monastery that was once south of the church is associated with abbot Teudebert and Duke Branimir.
It is a single-nave church with an elongated floor plan and a rectangular apse. South of it stood a Benedictine monastery for men; its remains could be made out until the beginning of the 20th century. Abbot Teudebert commissioned an altar screen on which Duke Branimir is inscribed. The monastery and church suffered in the Cyprus War of 1570 and then in the demolition of Nin in 1646. It was originally built in the Romanesque style with a semicircular sanctuary apse, which was probably reshaped into a rectangular one in the 15th century. The building dates from the 13th century.
