Nin, in Zadar County, is one of the oldest Croatian towns, and the Roman mosaic at the Carev vrt location recalls the time when an ancient municipium stood here. The place is interesting to lovers of antiquities because it lies east of the former forum, beside the road from the Church of the Holy Cross towards St Ambrose.
The mosaic is executed in black-and-white technique and is counted among the quality artistic works of its time. The surface is divided into circular and square fields framed by a border. In two square fields there were scenes of gladiatorial combat, but those fields were taken away in the Second World War, during the retreat of the Italian army. The circular fields show animals. The mosaic is dated from the first to the fourth century.
The remains are a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-2990.
