Cultural and Historical Ensemble of the Settlement of Turanj

Turanj is a coastal settlement in the municipality of Sveti Filip i Jakov, in Zadar County. It is interesting because it has kept the form of a fortified settlement from the 13th to the 20th century, in which the houses themselves form the defensive wall.

It is mentioned in charters from the 13th century, and in the 15th it was reinforced by a fortress in the shape of a square with three towers; only the tower at the northern corner has survived to this day. The fortifications were renewed in the 16th and 17th centuries. At the beginning of the 18th century the residential houses were also renovated, lined up side by side so that, where there was no rampart, the outer facades close off the place. In the 19th century several more representative two-storey houses with provincial-type historicist facades arose on the shore. The old core is dense and compact, as in other Adriatic settlements.

A protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4009.
