Vižula Peninsula and the Burle Isthmus, Medulin

The Vižula peninsula and the Burle isthmus are located in the municipality of Medulin in Istria County. They are interesting to archaeologists and curious visitors because they hide a large burial area from the Roman and late antique periods.

Through field reconnaissance on the Burle isthmus, partial investigations from 1980 to 1985 and rescue investigations from 1997 to 2001, carried out by the Archaeological Museum of Istria in Pula and the Centre for Archaeology of the University of Zagreb, it was established that a large multi-layered necropolis lies at the approach to the Vižula peninsula. Almost 500 graves of various types and burial customs were discovered. The finds date them to the period from the 1st to the 6th century.

The site is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code RRI-444.
