Napoleon's Monument, Makarska

On the western edge of Makarska, beside the main road and the edge of a pine forest, stands a stone pyramid known as Napoleon's Monument. It is an unusual reminder of the brief period of French rule in Dalmatia.

The monument is a pyramid-shaped obelisk, erected in 1808 in honour of Marshal Marmont. It originally stood in front of the Franciscan monastery in Makarska, in the park around the former small harbour. It remained in that position even after relocation, so travellers can still easily spot it today from a car or while walking. It was made of white Brač stone by the stonemasons Antun and Ivan Štambuk from the island of Brač.

The monument is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-5461.
