Makarska is a town in Split-Dalmatia County, situated in a bay bounded by the St Peter peninsula and Osejava. Its old town centre is protected as a cultural and historical ensemble, and offers visitors a walk through Baroque heritage right beside the sea.
The area has been inhabited since antiquity. During Turkish rule, from the 15th to the 17th century, the town suffered several times in conflicts with the Venetians, which is why it has no secular buildings older than the end of the 17th century. The town walls have not survived. The focus of the town is Kačić Square, laid out on a gentle slope, where Baroque houses line up beside the parish church. Along the coast stretches the waterfront with houses facing the sea: at Marineta they are simple vernacular houses, and further on Baroque and neo-style multi-storey buildings. In the eastern part of the town are the Franciscan monastery and the town cemetery.
The historic urban ensemble of Makarska is a protected cultural property and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-5140.
