Rural Ensemble of Kraj

Kraj is a settlement on a slope above the sea, surrounded by olive groves and dry-stone walls, in the municipality of Mošćenička Draga, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It offers a visitor the picture of an old coastal village with narrow, winding passages.

The main place of the settlement has the little Church of St Mary, a typical Liburnian little church with a small porch and a bell gable. The winding paths arose from the development of smaller buildings with articulated facades, with volte and balature, and a special feature is the so-called fifth facades: fumari or luminali on the gabled roofs, which light the raised attic space. Donji Kraj has ambient value, and the writer Viktor Car Emin was born here.

The ensemble is a protected cultural property and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code RRI-0213, Decision: 322/1-1969.
