The Croatian National Theatre in Osijek is located at 9 Županijska Street, built into a row of buildings along the street. For visitors it is of interest as an example of a 19th-century theatre building in Osijek-Baranja County.
It was built in 1886 to a design by Karl Klauser as a three-wing building with one upper floor. It is among the public theatre buildings created during the 19th century and bears the features of romantic historicism. It was not conceived merely as a temple of art, but as a complex social, cultural and entertainment centre, with a restaurant, a café, a billiards room, a casino, a dance floor and shops.
The building is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-1265, in the category of secular architectural heritage.
