Rural Ensemble of the Settlement of Sopaljska, Crikvenica

Sopaljska is a hamlet in the hinterland of Crikvenica, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, and an example of what a village in the former Principality of Vinodol looked like. For a visitor it is an opportunity to see authentic rural architecture, far from the bustle of the coast.

The ensemble dates from the 13th century. Part of the settlement still shows how house plots and yards were organised, and this attests that the rural and urban cores of the Vinodol region originally followed the same building pattern. A smaller number of houses have kept their original appearance: two-storey houses with a skoda, that is, an outside covered stone staircase, beneath which are one or more arch-vaulted spaces, volte. Beside the houses are dolci and dry-stone walls, thanks to which the surrounding landscape has kept a traditionally cultivated look with the value of a monument.

The rural ensemble is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-5089.
